ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Face Overlapping Global Outages

A major AI outage disrupted ChatGPT, Claude and Grok on September 3, 2026, leaving many users unable to access widely used artificial intelligence services. The disruptions occurred within a similar time window, prompting widespread reports of errors and unavailable features. However, there is no confirmed evidence that the incidents shared a single cause. 

Open-AI, Anthropic and xAI each acknowledged service problems through official status updates. Later, the companies reported that their affected services had recovered. The disruptions drew attention.

ChatGPT Experiences Elevated Errors

OpenAI’s status page reported elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex beginning at 2:58 p.m. UTC on September 3. The company said it was investigating the issue before applying a mitigation and monitoring the recovery. 

OpenAI later marked the incident as resolved. In comments reported by WIRED, an OpenAI spokesperson said a routing error beginning around 7:43 a.m. Pacific Time made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users across platforms. A solution was successfully implemented at about 8:17 a.m. Pacific Time.

The outage affected users trying to access ChatGPT and related features, while outage-monitoring services also recorded a surge in reports during the disruption.

Claude Faces Partial Service Outage

Anthropic’s Claude also experienced problems on the same day. According to Anthropic status updates cited by WIRED, the company began reporting a partial outage at 6:23 a.m. Pacific Time.

The incident involved elevated errors affecting several Claude models. Anthropic said it identified the cause and deployed a fix, with the main incident marked as resolved by 9:16 a.m. Pacific Time.

Users rely on Claude for conversational AI, coding, research and business workflows, meaning even temporary interruptions can disrupt work for individuals and organizations using the service.

Grok Goes Down Across Multiple Platforms

xAI’s Grok suffered a longer outage beginning at 1:30 p.m. UTC. xAI’s official status pages reported model issues affecting Grok on the web, Android, iOS, X and its API services.

The company later said traffic was healthy again. Its status page shows the web outage lasted approximately three hours and 37 minutes. WIRED reported that SpaceX, xAI’s parent company, attributed Grok’s problems to an outage at its Memphis compute center. 

Were the AI Outages Connected?

Because ChatGPT, Claude and Grok encountered problems during overlapping periods, users quickly questioned whether a shared infrastructure failure had caused the disruptions.

So far, no common cause has been confirmed. WIRED reported that neither OpenAI nor Anthropic identified a shared external provider as responsible. The companies also reported different technical circumstances around their respective incidents. Simultaneous or overlapping outages do not automatically mean the services failed for the same reason.

Impact of the Major AI Outage

The disruption highlighted how deeply generative AI tools have become integrated into everyday digital work. Students, developers, businesses, writers and professionals increasingly rely on AI platforms for research, coding, content creation and productivity.
